Setelah menanti beberapa bulan, akhirnya Nokia akhirnya mengumumkan handset seri N terbarunya yakni N97 agar dapat bersaing dengan iPhone dan sekaligus untuk mempromosikan tipe N Series. Dengan layar 3.5 inch touchscreen, camera 5 megapiksel dan memory 32GB, membuat N97 menjadi ponsel yang paling ditunggu di tahun baru 2009. Ponsel Nokia N97 ini diharapkan akan hadir di tahun depan, dengan fiturnya berupa keyboard QWERTY yang tersembunyi di touchscreen berukuran 3.5 inch, aspek rasio 16:9. Ponsel Nokia N97 juga dilengkapi camera 5 megapiksel di bagian belakang ponsel dengan lensa Carl Zeiss Tess dan dual LED flash. Tidak seperti iPhone atau T-Mobile G1, ponsel Nokia N97 ini dapat meng-capture video dalam kualitas DVD dengan aspek rasio 16:9

Ponsel Nokia N97 memiliki memory on-board 32GB, dua kali lipat kapasitas memory yang ada di iPhone. Sebagai tambahan, kapasitas tersebut juga dapat ditambah lagi dengan microSD card hingga 16GB atau 48GB di Nokia N97. Nokia N97 tersebut dibandrol dengan harga $700 tanpa subsidi carrier atau tanpa sim card. Nokia N97 ini juga memiliki koneksi 3G HSDPA dengan kecepatan 7.2Mb/s dan Wi-Fi, juga sebuah GPS dengan satu kompas elektronik. Nokia mengklaim bahwa N97 dapat memutar musik selama 37 jam dan video playback selama 4.5 jam

Walaupun Nokia N97 memiliki spesifikasi yang cukup bagus, namun semuanya tidak ada apa-apanya tanpa software. System dalam Nokia N97 berjalan di Symbian S50 5th Edition dan membawa interface yang sudah dikenal, meski belum dirilis secara resmi, Nokia 5800 Express Music atau yang dulunya dikenal dengan istilah ‘Tube’. Hal terbaru dalam sisi software N97 adalah widget screen yang mempermudah customer untuk mengupdate jejaring social secara otomatis dengan status dan lokasi yang Anda inginkan, juga termasuk gambar dan video.

Nokia sendiri juga memulai persaingan dengan layanan Apple MobileMe, dengan me-launching fitur baru untuk Ovi, perusahaan portal social. Customer N97 dapat menikmati layanan account email Ovi yang gratis dan dapat push-email ke calendar dan contact synchronizing, yang sebelumnya menjadi style T-Mobile G1.
